The History
Watch The Challenge Now!
The Pacific Cup tournament has always been host to some of the finest junior heavyweights not just from ECCW, but from around the world, and the 2005 tournament was no exception - a number of wrestlers from California's APW were participants, as well as two men - "American Dragon" Bryan Danielson, one of the biggest independent stars in the United States and a frequent competitor for New Japan Pro Wrestling in their junior heavyweight division, and Puma, a newcomer from the New Japan USA dojo in Los Angeles, CA and one of their fastest rising new stars.

Both Danielson and Puma reached the finals of the Pacific Cup tournament on April 23rd, 2005 in Vancouver, meeting possibly ECCW's newest junior heavyweight superstar, Aaron Idol, in a three-way match to determine the 2005 Pacific Cup champion. In an epic twenty-five minute battle that saw each man exchange advantage and disadvantage and execute stunning holds and maneuvers, Idol captured the 2005 Pacific Cup by pinning Danielson in the center of the ring after a thunderous top-rope backdrop suplex.

An emotional Idol was elated to finally have his hard work in the junior heavyweight division recognized - and it seemed as Danielson and Puma were expressing their appreciation as well, as the two presented the trophy to Idol and Danielson gave a speech as to how much he respected Idol for what he had done. Suddenly, as Idol turned his back on Danielson and Puma, the two attacked him from behind, laying him out with vicious shots to the back and head, and spitting in the tradition of ECCW by destroying the Pacific Cup trophy itself! As Puma restrained the helpless Idol, Danielson accosted him on the mic, stating New Japan's superiority over the junior heavyweights of ECCW!

Just when it looked hopeless for Idol, Dave Richards sprinted from the backstage area into the ring, and after a brief struggle, Richards was able to evict Danielson and Puma from ringside, much to the delight of the sellout Vancouver crowd! However, the damage had been done - the Pacific Cup trophy was destroyed, and Idol had suffered a bruised sternum at the hands of Danielson and Puma.

Richards got the microphone and stated that even though he was from the United States, ECCW was indeed his home! ECCW owner Dave Republic took the microphone and issued a challenge to Danielson, Puma, and all of New Japan Pro Wrestling, stating that New Japan chairman Antonio Inoki had thirty days to answer ECCW's challenge -- "then we bring the fight to YOU!"

New Japan took their sweet time responding to the challenge, with nothing from them... until the very limit of the 30 days given to them by Republic. On May 24th, at the end of Republic's 30-day open challenge period, New Japan USA Vice-President David Marquez called Republic's office in Port Coquitlam, and rather than talk to Republic directly, left this message on his voicemail:

"Hello, Mr. Republic, this is the New Japan office calling.. it appears you have, uh, some sort of a challenge of sorts sent out to Mr. Inoki. Well, word has reached Tokyo, and Mr. Inoki would like us to relay the following to you:

We're not trying to insult you or anything, but you're on a different level than us when it comes to the pro wrestling business, and unfortunately, Mr. Inoki doesn't have the time to everything that is said or challenged or whatever in the world of pro wrestling. So, unfortunately, we really don't have an answer for you, so you and your.. Juggernauts, and Hot & Bothered, and .. I think you have some kid called Memphis there or something, and a couple of Moondogs.. and I guess, just continue doing your shows, and we wish you all the success in the world, but unfortunately, you're not at our caliber, and thus we're just... not going to answer your challenge. All the success in the world, and.. everything else. So thank you, much success in the future, goodbye."

ECCW would not take this slight by New Japan lightly. On the evening of May 26th, Dave Richards flew to Los Angeles, California, and confronted Marquez in the parking lot of the New Japan USA dojo. Richards delivered a letter to Marquez from ECCW owner Dave Republic on behalf of ECCW, in response to the voicemail left by Marquez earlier this week. The letter, whose contents are unknown at this time, was addressed to newly-appointed NJPW President Simon Inoki (the son-in-law of Antonio Inoki).

In addition, Richards demanded that both Puma and Danielson return to ECCW so that Richards and Aaron Idol can face them in the ring! Also, Richards informed Marquez that this extends all the way to the heavyweight division - the NWA/ECCW Champion, the 400 pound Juggernaut, is also ready to face any New Japan wrestlers with the NWA/ECCW Championship on the line!

The Major Players
Aaron Idol
By winning the 2005 Pacific Cup tournament, Aaron Idol staked his claim to being the top junior heavyweight in ECCW. However, Danielson and Puma ruined Idol's shining moment by turning on him and destroying the coveted Pacific Cup trophy. Idol has proclaimed he will construct a new Pacific Cup trophy "out of Dragon and Puma's spines!"
American Dragon
Bryan Danielson is a representative of the New Japan USA dojo, and has tasted success around the world and also in New Japan and ECCW, winning the IWGP junior heavyweight tag team title and the NWA Canadian junior heavyweight championship. Now firmly on the side of New Japan, Danielson has vowed to prove why New Japan's talent is the best in the world, and at the expense of ECCW!
Dave Richards
If Idol is #1, Dave Richards may be #1A - a fast rising junior heavyweight who is on the cusp of greatness in ECCW with his hard style and fiery attitude in the ring. Richards courageously saved Idol from further attack by Danielson and Puma, and has vowed to stand at the side of not only Idol, but all of ECCW!
Puma
A product of the New Japan USA dojo, Puma may be one of the quickest junior heavyweights in the world. Since his debut in 2003, he has impressed fans around the world, and had an impressive showing in the Pacific Cup tournament. Unfortunately, that success wasn't good enough for him, as he helped Danielson ruin Idol's victory with his unprovoked attack.
Dave Republic
Few were more angered by this turn of events than Dave Republic, the owner of ECCW, who now has to deal with a full-fledged interpromotional war! Taking the offensive, Republic demanded a response from Inoki within thirty days, and has further provoked New Japan by sending Dave Richards down to confront David Marquez and deliver a letter for Simon Inoki! What is next?
Simon Inoki
Simon Inoki is the son-in-law of Antonio Inoki, and the newly-appointed President of New Japan Pro Wrestling. He's learned well from his father-in-law, but now finds himself having to answer to ECCW's challenge! How will the young head of New Japan react to whatever was in the letter delivered by Dave Richards?
Juggernaut
The challenge doesn't extend only to junior heavyweights - the 400-pound Juggernaut, the reigning NWA/ECCW Champion, is also involved! He is willing to face any wrestler from New Japan Pro Wrestling, going so far as to put the NWA/ECCW Championship itself on the line!
Antonio Inoki
The legendary Antonio Inoki is the founder of New Japan Pro Wrestling and currently serves as its chairman, making day to day decisions for the promotion and its talent. Now that the gauntlet has been thrown down by ECCW, will Inoki and his son-in-law accept the challenge on behalf of New Japan?
David Marquez
David Marquez is the vice-president of the New Japan USA dojo, New Japan's foray into training competitors in the United States, and is the most ready liaision for New Japan's offices. Marquez has gotten himself deep into the situation already, leaving a condescending message basically laughing off the challenge, and paying for it by cowering from Dave Richards!
The Pacific Cup tournament was only the beginning of the war between Extreme Canadian Championship Wrestling and New Japan Pro Wrestling. Who will Inoki send to represent New Japan? Will it be somebody from the New Japan USA dojo? Or will an established star make his presence felt in ECCW? And how will ECCW respond to this game of chess between the two promotions? The circle of those involved is growing - who will be the next to feel the effects of this interpromotional war?
