RESULTS: TLC4 Heats Up, Pacific Cup Set!
TLC4 is just two months away, and on Saturday night in Vancouver, ECCW fans got a little taste of the carnage to come, as the four competitors in TLC4 went at it in two TLC preview matches, with two championships on the line!
Memphis was not only looking to successfully defend the NWA/ECCW Championship against Sid Sylum, but to get a measure of revenge against the Chill Town member for his actions last year that ended Memphis' first title reign.. as Sylum wanted to end Memphis' second reign himself and bring the gold back to Chill Town! The champion and challenger went at it from the opening bell, with Memphis unleashing everything in his arsenal to keep Sylum at bay, even moonsaulting Sylum from the stage to the arena floor! As Memphis had Sylum in check, Sylum pulled referee Mike Sweetser in the way of an oncoming Memphis, sending the official to the floor and paving the way for Chill Town leader Scotty Mac to make an appearance with a table! As Sylum lariated Memphis nearly out of his boots and set up on the top rope, Scotty yelled to Sylum to attempt to put Memphis through the table at ringside! However, this interaction gave Memphis the opportunity to scale the ropes and drive his knees into Sylum with a vicious top-rope lungblower, giving him the three-count and a successful NWA/ECCW Championship defense, as he goes into TLC4 in two months to defend against Scotty Mac, Sid Sylum and Kenny Lush!
Lush had his own concerns for the night, as he wanted more than anything to end Scotty Mac's one-year-plus reign as NWA Canadian heavyweight champion! Lush and Scotty have been no strangers to each other over the last few months, and both had each other well-scouted to the point of not only countering each other's favorite maneuvers, but executing them on each other - Lush delivering a superkick to Scotty, and Scotty showing impressive strength with a 100 Mile Driver on the challenger! Lush appeared to have the title well in hand after using Scotty Mac's own table against him, as he threw Scotty to the floor through the table with a released 100 Mile Driver! But as Lush went to throw Scotty back inside the ring, Sid Sylum came to ringside with a ladder, driving the ladder into Lush's face and drawing the disqualification! Memphis ran to the ring to make the save, and Lush set up the ladder in the ring and dove onto Sylum and Scotty on the floor! The two matches have only whet ECCW fans' appetites for the violence and death-defying carnage of TLC4 on July 4th in Vancouver!
ECCW's next major event is the 2009 Pacific Cup tournament, taking place on June 6th in the Russian Community Centre, and the 12-person field is now complete after the final two qualifiers in Vancouver! Mattias Wild, fresh from his impressive performances at the Wrestling With Hunger event, entered the tournament for the first time with a victory over fellow WWH alumnus Alex Plexis. After Artemis Spencer defended the NWA Canadian junior heavyweight championship against "Superfly" Dan Myers in a battle of two previous qualifiers, The Divine Prophet demanded to know when his qualifying match would be! NWA representative Mike Sweetser interrupted the Prophet to inform him that his qualifying match would take place right now - and it would be against Prophet's abused pet MANTHER! Prophet laughed this off, saying he would have full control over MANTHER, going so far as to tell MANTHER he would officially "baptize" him into the Prophecy.. but MANTHER finally lashed back at his keeper, striking him with a low blow to start the match! Prophet regained control of the contest, but got too cocky with his protege, giving MANTHER the opportunity to tie up Prophet with a crucifix hold for the three-count, and entry into the 2009 Pacific Cup tournament! The Prophecy was not pleased, as Prophet, Spencer and Mike Dempsey viciously attacked MANTHER, only to be run off by "Brilliant" Billy Suede! Suede helped up the victorious MANTHER, and challenged Spencer to a match for the NWA Canadian junior heavyweight title at TLC4... but this time, in a no time limit match!
With TLC4 coming up, Memphis may have more to deal with than he expected, as a visit to his brother MR2 in On The Runway turned ugly in a hurry! MR2 lashed into Memphis, stating that MR2 had been there to help Memphis during their Models Inc. days, and throughout Memphis' two reigns as NWA/ECCW Champion, but when MR2 was being attacked by the Church of the Divine Prophecy, or was being put through a table by Ice in Nanaimo, Memphis was nowhere to be found. Memphis attempted to talk his brother down, but there was no getting into MR2's head, as he challenged Memphis to an NWA/ECCW Championship match! Memphis stormed out of the Runway with nothing settled and a definite rift between the two brothers, a distraction that Memphis cannot afford going into the biggest defense of his championship reign!
The NWA/ECCW tag team championship was also on the line in Vancouver, as Pop Culture made their first title defense on the mainland against Lumberjack Bubba & Junior! Bubba and Junior's combination of experience and youthful energy overwhelmed Pop Culture at the start of the contest, as Bubba and Junior pressed Ice into the air and threw him down onto Bishop at ringside! However, Pop Culture were able to finally isolate Bubba in the ring, and use Junior's inexperience to draw him in to distract the referee and allow the champions to double-team Bubba. As Bubba fought his way away, SuperGirls champion Veronika Vice made a surprising appearance, coaxing Junior from ringside and to the backstage area, leaving Bubba to be pinned by Ice after Bishop booted him in the face. The question is, why was Veronika involved, and is there collusion between the SuperGirls champion and the NWA/ECCW tag team champions?
