Island title up for grabs as ECCW comes to Duncan

The Vancouver Island championship will be on the line this Saturday as Elite Canadian Championship Wrestling rolls into the Cowichan Exhibition.

BJ Laredo, a.k.a. Brent LaPlante, who lives in Nanaimo and works in Duncan, will be looking to bring the belt back to the Island in a bout with Surrey wrestler Azeem the Dream.

“People can expect a good, solid fight,” said LaPlante. “I will do everything I can to bring that title back to the Island. Azeem has held it for a long time.”

The Island title fight is one of three big draws on the pro wrestling card. A no-rules “Duncan Street Fight” between long-standing rivals The Cremator and Scotty Mac is also expected to be a highlight of the night. LaPlante describes the Cremator as a “seven-foot monster of a man,” and Scotty Mac as a “pretty boy.”

Another headline battle will take place between Ria Von Slasher and Nicole Matthews in the women’s division.

The card will be rounded out by five or six other matches, said LaPlante.

“When people asked us what we wanted to be when we grew up, everyone else was a fireman of a policeman,” he recalled. “I was a wrestler.”

ECCW cards are “100 per cent family friendly” said LaPlante.

“It’s something kids can come to and enjoy,” he said. “It’s definitely fun for all. We try to incorporate the audience as much as we can.”

Saturday’s event at the Cowichan Exhibition will get going at 8 p.m. Doors open at 7: 30, with tickets available at the door, $15 for general admission and $18 for the front row. Fans can meet the wrestlers at Boston Pizza after the show.
